Vietnam - Milford

Description

Click for Milford, Massachusetts Forecast

Vietnam is similar to riding in Lynn Woods, it's a little faster and there's still some good technical stuff.

We're looking for more info for this section, feel free to submit your description

Nam is also threatened by development. If you want to do something about this and stop it then join NEMBA.

Fires

Vietnam has been plagued by fires being set off. Check this out from Chris Blandino:

I was on a ride with a few friends when I came across the two troopers from the "Massachuesetts State Police Detective Division: Fire and Explosion Investigation Section". Two of the nicest troopers that I have ever met.

They related the seriousness of the fires that have been happening there almost everyday between 2-4 mostly...they told me how the town of Milford has spent over $100,000 allready to fight these fires, and the loss of a truck and injuries of two fireman when one of the fire vehicles rolled down a hill. They asked me to pass along the info to contact them in the event that someone has seen or heard of someone that is doing this. It must stop...so if you have some info...call PLEASE...

Trooper Timothy P. Bombard
VM: 978-567-3346
FAX:978-567-3119
24HRS:508-820-2121 (this is the State Police Line I think)

He is out of the Stow MA Station I think since his address is on State Road there....anyway...call him if you know something...and as always..ciao.....

ACTION ALERT: 08/02/99
Arson in Vietnam

The Milford Fire Department needs help to catch those responsible for setting fires along the trails known as Vietnam in Milford, Massachusetts. Twenty-five or more fires have been set since May, and sometimes multiple fires have been set in a single day. Anyone who has knowledge or sees anything suspicious is urged to call Deputy Chief John Touhey at 508-473-1214.

According to one report by a mountain biker on July 15th, he and a friend put out a small fire along one of the trails using water from their hydration packs. They noticed large sneaker prints (size 11-12) all around the fire, and they followed the footprints up to the cell towers and then down the powerlines to Rte. 85.

Because mountain bikers cover so much ground so quickly and quietly, we are in a good position to help put a stop to this. However, please DO NOT APPROACH anyone who you believe suspicious. Call the authorities and let them handle it. This person (or persons) should be regarded as very dangerous.

Trail ideas

Ride on up the fire road you saw as you drove down Rt 85, keep following the power lines as far as you can . eventually you'll come to the end of the lines (you can't go further), turn back and go into the woods as early as you can (you should find a largish flat area with smooth rocks either side and a sharp descent into the woods. ride around in the woods and you should end up coming out where you started.

Another option is to ride along the power lines until you come to the pyramid rock and dash into the woods there - this seems to be a different loop which brought us out at the end of the power lines.

If you don't fancy the long loose fireroad up at the start, carry on along rt 85 and duck into the woods there (on the right) you should find your way back to the power lines eventually

NOTE: These routes all intertwine and so you could end up anywhere - even lost - don't blame me! If you do get lost - listen out for traffic and head to it - chances are you'll hit 495 (and the power lines) or 85.

Post Ride Ideas

If you continue up 85 for about 1/4 mile, there's a whole bunch of rocks by the road, go up the dirt road there - bear right through a gate when you get the choice - you should end up at a quarry which is great for post ride relaxation. Be careful if you jump!

There's a Wendy's not far further the other way down 85.

Directions

Zoom down Route 90 west until you hit 495 south. Carry on down 495 south to exit 20 which is for route 85. at the end of the off ramp take a left and park in the first business building on your right. The whole trip takes about an hour from Boston and only 30 mins from the junction of Rt 90 and Rt 95.

Trail Heads

The land owner is starting to pay attention to bikers using his land. If they get sufficiently annoyed they may try and restrict access - No trespassing signs have already been put up.

If you wish to try and limit the observed trail use then try a different trail head - here's a suggestion from Bob Scott

If anybody else wants to use the rt 16 entrance to make it look like bike traffic is down, you can find it by taking the same I495 exit (Route 85) and going toward Wendy's. At Wendy's turn left and go to the next set of lights - Rte 16. Turn left and go about 1/4-1/2 mile. On your left you will see a pumping station and a parking area just past that. The trail head is obvious and heads up a short hill to an electrical power substation. Follow the fence around to the right and you'll see a road that will take you to the playground rocks.

Meeting Places

Nam

Why not meet there - as you get off the exit for 85 - take a left under 495 and drive along, we usually park in the lot for the first business building you see on your right, just after the road into the power lines.

Marriott Hotel

This is a good meeting place close to Boston so we can share cars all the way down the pike (Rt 90). Easiest way to get there - Rt 95/128 south take the exit for Rt 30 and take a right (or a left can't remember!) at the end - look for the cars with bikes on the top. we have a map of how to get there.

If you're coming from Boston on Route 90, go through the tolls as if you were getting onto 128/95 and stay left after the tolls - follow the signs for route 30 and keep hanging a right - that should get you to the Mariott.

Framingham Plaza

This is on Route 90 so good for people zooming down from Boston
