Coyote Hill, VT- May 28, 2001

Several die-hard Rage racers headed North to a little-known, but really great race that brings out New Englands top pros at the Coyote Hill Mountain Bike Camp in Fairlee, VT. Tom Masterson, a former world cup racer designed a course on his property that's four miles of the toughest technical singletrack Vermont can serve up (each lap took 45 minutes -- only 4 miles!). Ben Moody and Gary (CozyCozy) Contic raced and (sound of drum roll) Cozy won the Sport Vet class, finishing second overall (sound of wild applause).

The expert/pro class took off with a ugly thunderstorm overhead and bolts of lightning were coming down literally right beside us. So they left them to finish 1 lap and pulled them from the course. Ben Moody was pulled from the course along with the entire field after one lap.

Race Observations:

It rained at the start which turned technical into dangerous (25% of the field DNF'd). Cozy started off in 10th place, he picked off 5 riders. "After the first climb I found I was hyper ventilating and thinking of dropping out, but I couldn't do that (heck Christine never stops, how could I?). So, I had to slow my pace about 10 minutes and get the breath back, once I got that in check I was powering the hills and then my back started to burn out. Being that this was my first off-road ride this year (editors note -- isn't this a MOUNTAIN biking club?). I thought I was paying for it. Then the wonders of big road miles and hills (see last editors note) started to kick in. My back started to feel better. The second lap was half spent playing cat and mouse with another rider. He's in front at this moment, me on his tire and we're starting a tech. rooty climb. All of the sudden this tire spins out and he goes down, I go off in the woods to stay on my bike and luckily get the trail back and power the hill, then down shifting at the top to get the demoralizing effect (editors note: this is a Cozy trick worth copying, I've seen him make other riders cry as they struggle to the top of the hill, only to see Cozy's arse downshifting and that terrible, "hee, hee, hee") and that was the last I saw of him (no mercy baby). At this point I am in 4th place going into the 3rd and final lap. I come around the corner of the first climb and there's a guy with a broken chain, now I am in 3rd place. Next thing you know there's a rider waking his bike up the trail. I get to him "are you alright?", he says "I need food". I couldn't help him, so now I am in second place overall in the sport class and finished that way." (editors note - any hint of mercy for other competing riders was edited out).
