Race Report from Jonny Mac

Reports of thundershowers were greatly exaggerated, as racers were met with blue skies and temps in the mid 80's for this year's Fat Tire Classic in Farmington, CT. This race course is notorious for being flat and fast, but a muddy roots section and several sharp turns at the end of the downhills made for some exciting action. There were several new Ragers on hand, each racing well and having a good time.

Team Rage-Harpoon-International has two of the most talented developing racers in New England on the squad. Both race in the Expert 19-29 class. After winning last week's expert race at Massasoit, Damon Parke placed 2nd in a very large field followed by Nate Rinquist in fifth -- strong show guys.

Making his Rage-Harpoon-International debut, Tom Walker put the hurt on the rest of the First Timers class, finishing in 5th place. Way to go! We'll be expecting bigger and better things from you in the future. This is what Team Rage-Harpoon-International is all about. If you want to try racing for the first time, we get a kick out of getting people into the sport, so join Tom and we'll cheer you on!

In the Beginner's women's class, Chris Buzzell and Linda Tarbox represented Rage in the Women's Open division. Both finished strong, in 21st and 23rd places respectively. Chris finished the course in 56.20, followed by Linda a few minutes later, keeping her time under 60 mins.

Young Zachary Rouse had a mechanical while in the lead by 2 minutes of his beginner class. He'll be showing up again this next weekend for the Spring Boogie. That new jersey will be all the luck he'll need.

In Men's Senior I, Leo Kiefer, a new Rager, rode hard to a 17th place finish. Rumors that NORBA was forcing Paul Margetis to move up to Sport class were squashed, as he was seen grinding up at the back of the Beginner class - he finished in 21st place (look out for Paul in the 24-hours event this year).

Another new Rager, Joe Levine, had a good ride and finished in 23rd place. In one of the bigger classes of the day, Senior II saw several Ragers battling it out. Jon Lerner finished in the 44 minute range - good enough to take 16th. A smoke-free Eric Hill finished in 28th place, followed by Mike Duval in 35th.

In the sport class, John Myntinnen and Kevin Johnson finished the race, battling 90 degree temperatures during the race (about twice as hot as it's been here for the last several weeks).

Finally, in the veteran men's expert class, Chris Smith hung on to his lunch to finish 24th (he thought the race was a 4-lapper and left in all out on the course - except his lunch).

In addition to the Fat Tire Classic race, two team members competed at the Rockbuster Duathlon in Ashland, MA on Sunday with Dave Currie taking 1st place in this off-road race. Christine "No Fear" Hagg also competed and finished the trail-run, mountain bike event (editor's note - she came in 3rd for the mt. biking leg of the race!). Congrats to both of you!

This coming weekend, the Team Rage-Harpoon-International squad will feature over 30 racers in the kickoff of the EFTA NECS series at Burrilville, Rhode Island.
