Thanks to Jeff
(a writer has set the bar high) we've got a racer by racer breakdown!
Kate Walton
-- Novice Senior I -- ripped off a win! with a 1:03 -- way to go Kate!
Nori Kawahata
-- Sport Senior I -- in his debut, back from knee surgery and
sporting a new ride, Nori takes a 27th place with a 1:55.
Ben Moody
-- Pro/Expert -- still recovering from nerve damage from last week,
Ben wisely ignores a misguided coach's advice to take the weekend
off, instead shows up, wins! Nice job Ben!
Adam Bucklin
-- Pro/Expert -- not wanting Ben to feel bad, pulls back at the end
and finishes 3rd after winning Eastern Cup last week. What day is
it Buck? RACE DAY!
Matt Potter
-- Sport Senior I -- decided it was time to upgrade to Sport. Finished
30th. Nice job Matt.
Jim Urbine
- Novice Senior II - with back spasms wreaking havoc, Jim still blasted
to a 14th place out of 19 entrants with a time of 1:00:58.
Jeff Cutler
- Novice Veteran - Jeff had a plan to grab the wheel of the leader
and hang on for dear life. This worked great for about 42 yards, until
the guy who's wheel he grabbed crashed on the uphill. 15 racers quickly
squirted away and Jeff only caught two of them over the next 9+ miles.
14th out of 33, time of 0:59:23
David Currie
- Sport Senior II - after valiantly pleading with race organizers
to let him ride EXPERT, Dave was FORCED to race Sport for what will
probably be his last time. Witnesses say Dave launched himself over
both of the jumps on the top part of the course and the audience at
the Gravity Cavity can attest that Dave stayed OFF his brakes for
the whole plummet. Nice job! Dave placed 3rd in his class with a time
of 1:29.
Jeff "Udder"
Udell - Clydesdale - as hard as he tried, Jeff was unable to crash
in front of, on top of, or in the general vicinity of Andrea. He wanted
to make sure she took this into account in the future when she begins
to rant and rave about how Clydesdales are unfeeling, nearly inhuman
and inhumane creatures who just get in the way. Quoteth sir Udell,
"Who's your buddy? Who's your pal?" He finished 10th in the 'dale
field. Great job!
Jonathan Lerner
- Novice Senior II - using a unique Chris Carmichael diet of jam,
peanut butter and bagels, Jonathan schooled most of the pack and finished
7th out of 19 with a time of 0:54:55. Unfortunately, Jonathan didn't
bring enough bagels to share. Maybe next time.
Dave "I suck"
Alden - Sport Senior II - while trying to prove Pythagoras' theorem
that one does not need a chain to finish 25th, David did just that.
By using the unique racing tactic of dropping his chain at the top
of every climb and in any muddy section, David saw most of the Moody
race course at a lower speed than most racers, but - and this is critical
- at a higher speed than ANY GOLFER. So, racing is still better than
golf and you'll get them next time Dave!
Michelle Wilson
- Novice Veteran - with the leaders still in sight around the first
turn at the top of the start hill, Michelle's bike decided to become
one with nature and bond with a branch. Her rear derailleur bit down
hard and splintered wood into the pulleys and the chain. Frantically,
Michelle cleared most of the debris only to find out that her bike
was shifting maniacally from high to low and vice versa. A true rager,
Michelle rode onward making up distance and time on the pack until
her dainty digger at the Gravity Cavity caused her bike to lock itself
into the eighth cog in the back. This crash, the stick and what turned
out to be a single speed, mired Michelle in 5th place out of 9 with
a time of 1:11:04.
Leo Kiefer
- Novice Senior II - finished in 5th place in a field of 19, just
off the podium.
Chris Smith
- Expert Veteran - Mr. Top Ten finishes in 8th place on a course he
said was great and oh so fast.
Tony Velleco
-- Sport Senior II -- 39th place finish in 1:59.
Sally Hewitt
- Sport Senior II - had a bit of a balance issue and fell over
three times and then added three endos into the mix for a total of
six crashes. In spite of the time she spent on the ground, Sally says,
"I liked the course a lot, except that it was a bit too slippery and
my skinny rear tire wasn't working too well for me. I also wasn't
accustomed to all the Sport & Expert men needing to pass me, like
gangbusters, especially it seemed on the technical downhill (slippery)
so I kept either yielding and stopping for them, or crashing right
in front of them, which I'm sure they just loved." A big fan of the
Gravity Cavity, Sally also stopped to help a lady who needed water
and ended up 12th in her class with a time of 2:14:00.
Tristram Langford
- Sport Senior II - garnered 23rd place in his class with a time
of 1:45:00. Tristram was a crowd favorite in the Gravity Cavity and
received many accolades and style points for his log jumps. Sadly,
a spoke on his rear wheel decided to pop loose on one landing, but
it didn't hinder his performance. Nice ride Tristram!
Andrea Jones
- Novice Veteran - although she finished FIRST!!, Andrea was whining
and lamenting the fact that Jeff Cutler's time was still faster than
hers. Andrea vowed to get a new Titus and kick the crap out of Jeff
at the next race. Her time of 1:03:08 was really WAY BEHIND Jeff's
time, but who's counting. In addition, Andrea wanted to thank Jeff
Udell (so many Jeffs) for keeping out of her way. She had enough trouble
staying on the trail (fell off a bridge into the river), staying upright
(a fellow rider decided to topple on top of Andrea) and staying focused
(she was chatting about shopping or some such sport with a junior
rider right before skidding off the bridge into the river).
Judy Keeley
- continued the winning ways of the women with a FIRST PLACE in
Novice Senior II with a time of 1:03. She took a bit longer than that
to select her prize from the table and had to be assisted by the Rage
prize selection intervention squad.
Mike Tabaczynski
- Novice Veteran came up with a respectable 17th place in his
race with a time of 1:01:49. Mike's been improving steadily each race
and hopes to crack the top 10 by season's end.
Whitney Brown
- Sport Senior II - placed second in her class with a time of 1:53:00.
